The Kansas City Chiefs and Cincinnati Bengals met in a Week 17 matchup with huge playoff implications on the line. The Bengals were fighting for their chance to make the postseason coming into today’s game with an 8-7 record. The Chiefs (9-6) would need to win this game in order to secure the AFC West title.
In a very tight game it was Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker who would decide the outcome of the game. His career-best 6 for 6 on field goal attempts would push Kansas City to a 25-17 victory.
Rough Night For The Bengals
This high stakes game was not without its moments. Midway through the game, tensions ran high as Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase and the Chiefs’ L’Jarius Sneed got into a heated argument, and eventually a team-wide scrum resulted in offsetting personal fouls.
After falling behind 17-10 the Chiefs began to apply pressure. ESPN reports that they stuffed the Bengals on fourth-and-1 at the Kansas City 6, then drove 82 yards for Butker’s third field goal. And after the Bengals had to punt, Mahomes hit Rashee Rice for 67 yards to set up Butker’s chip shot and give the Chiefs the lead for good.
What’s Next For The Chiefs & Bengals?
With the Bengals losing today, they have been eliminated from the playoff race. Next week they will host the Cleveland Browns as they attempt to play spoiler to the hot Browns team. For the Chiefs, this win allowed them to secure their 8th AFC West Division crown and they will take their momentum into Los Angeles as they face the Chargers.
