Chiefs Rally To Win 2nd Super Bowl, Beat 49ers 25-22 In Overtime

CHIEFS vs. 49ERS | SUPER BOWL LVIII

The Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers took to Allegant Stadium in Las Vegas for Super Bowl LVIII. Kansas City (12-5) are the AFC Champions after being the Baltimore Ravens two weeks ago. The 49ers (11-6) beat the Detroit Lions to take the NFC Crown.

FIRST QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS

The 49ers would win the coin toss and elect to kick off to start the game. San Francisco QB Brock Purdy would get to work leading them down the field with passes to FB Kyle Juszczyk and RB Christian McCaffrey. The Chiefs defense would force a fumble from McCaffrey, giving them good field position for their first offensive drive.

Defense would be the theme of the first quarter as both teams would exchange punts. The 49ers would score the first points of the game off of a 55-yard field goal from kicker Jake Moody. This would be the longest field goal in Super Bowl history.

SECOND QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS

Kansas City would take over on offense to start the second quarter. Just five plays into their drive, RB Isiah Pacheco would fumble the ball, giving the 49ers possession once again. Both teams would again exchange punts after their respective defenses forced three-and-outs. San Francisco would take possession and eight plays later they would score on a trick pass play to McCaffrey for 21 yards.

With the score 10-0, the Chiefs would try to cut into the lead before halftime. QB Patrick Mahomes used his arm to lead a drive where he found WR Rashee Rice three times for 20 yards. Their 13 play drive would end with kicker Harrison Butker kicking a 28 yard field goal to make the score 10-3 at halftime.

The Super Bowl Halftime show was headlined by Usher and he brought all of his friends! Alicia Keys, H.E.R., Lil Jon, Ludacris, Will.i.am and Jermaine Dupri all took the stage to assist Usher, 45, during the career-spanning set, which started with the song “Caught Up.

THIRD QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS

The Chiefs would receive the ball after halftime and got off to an ugly start. After a near turnover from Mahomes fumbling a pass to Pacheco on first down, two plays later he would throw an interception to S Ji’Ayir Brown that put the 49ers at the Kansas City 45. Defense would take over again for both teams as they would force each other to punt.

Mahomes would use his feet on the next drive. He would run for a total of 26 yards including a 22 yard scamper on third down. Despite his efforts, the Chiefs found themselves on fourth down. Butker would be called out to narrow the margain and he would nail a 57-yard field goal, making his attempt the longest in Super Bowl history.

With the score 10-6, both teams would swap punts once again. On a punt from Kansas City, the 49ers would muff on the catch allowing the Chiefs to recover the ball at the 16 yard line. Mahomes would then find WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling for their first touchdown of the game.

FOURTH QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS

The 49ers would begin a lengthy drive that bled into the fourth quarter. Now down by three, Purdy would find 4 different receivers to move them down the field into Chiefs territory. He hit Jauan Jennings for a 10 yard touchdown pass making the score 16-13. The extra point attempt by San Francisco was blocked.

The Chiefs received the ball and Mahomes and TE Travis Kelce would finally connect. Kelce was held to just one catch for one yard in the first half. On this drive he would have two catches for 29 yards. The 49ers defense again would prove to be a problem for Mahomes. After nearly forcing him to fumble on the drive, they would sack him forcing the Chiefs to settle for a field goal that tied the game at 16.

The 49ers would take seven plays to get to the Chief 35 yard line with the two-minute warning stopping the game. Their drive would stall out, bringing out Moody to kick a 53 yard field goal and take the lead 19-16. Kansas City would take the ball with 1:50 left in the game. Mahomes would again use his arm and feet to get the Chiefs in position to either tie or win the game. Deep in the red zone, Kelce & Mahomes couldn’t connect on a touchdown pass.

With ten seconds left in the game, Butker got the call and would kick a 29 yard field goal to tie the game and send it to overtime!

OVERTIME BITES THE 49ERS

San Francisco would win the coin toss for the second time in the contest and elected to receive. Purdy got to work finding McCaffrey for a huge pass that got them to the Kansas City 26 yard line. McCaffrey then rushed to get them inside the 10 but after a incomplete pass from Purdy, Moody was brought out to kick a field goal.

This made the score 22-19 and forced the Chiefs to either tie with a kick or score a touchdown to win the game.

The Chiefs took possession and Mahomes began to work his comeback magic. On a 13 play drive that included a 19 yard run from Mahomes and backwards pass to Valdes-Scantling, the Chiefs got to the 49ers 13 yard line. Two plays later Mahomes would find WR Mecole Hardman for a touchdown pass. This would end the game with the score 25-22 and make the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl LVIII Champions!

SUPER BOWL CHAMPS ONCE AGAIN

Chiefs Survive Bills 27-24, Advance to AFC Championship Game

CHIEFS vs. BILLS | AFC DIVISIONAL ROUND PLAYOFFS

The Buffalo Bills would host the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Divisional Round this evening. The Chiefs (11-6) arrived as the #3 seed after leaving the Dolphins out in the cold 26-7 in the Wild Card round. Buffalo (11-6) is the #2 seed and advanced to this round after beating the Steelers 34-17. This game is the first road playoff game of QB Patrick Mahomes’ career.

BILLS STRIKE FIRST

The Bills would receive the ball to start the first quarter. After an early fumble by WR Stefon Diggs, the Bills would get things together on offense. They would take over 6 minutes and 14 plays to produce the game’s first points as Buffalo scored on a field goal from kicker Tyler Bass. Bills QB Josh Allen worked with his arm and his legs to push them upfield.

Kansas City would take over on offense. Mahomes would throw 3/4 and 40 yards to move them into Bills’ territory. The seven play drive would end in a field goal from Harrison Butkner, tying the game 3-3. Buffalo took over on offense and on another lenghty drive found themselves just outside the red zone to end the first quarter.

Three plays into the second quarter, Allen would cap off an 11 play drive with a 5 yard touchdown run. With the score now 10-3, Kansas City would attempt to answer with a score to pull even. After an ten play drive that stalled out due to a fumble by Mecole Hardman Jr., the Chiefs would settle for three points making the score 10-6.

JOSH ALLEN’S LEGS CARRY BILLS

The Bills would punt after a short drive on offense. Mahomes and Co. would move quickly down the field off of huge 28 yard run from Clyde Edwards-Helaire. The 5 play drive ended with Mahomes connecting with TE Travis Kelce for a 22 yard touchdown pass. Taylor Swift cheered from the press box as the Chiefs would take the lead 13-10.

Buffalo would make a last attempt to reclaim the lead before halftime. Allen found Diggs for a 15-yard first down and then hit Latavius Murray for another 15 yard strike. With under a minute to go, Allen ran for 20 yards to get them deep in the red zone. The drive would end with Allen getting his second rushing touchdown of the game and taking the lead 17-13.

With the Chiefs down 4, they would receive the ball to start the second half. Will Kansas City be able to turn it around?

CHIEFS TAKE OVER IN SECOND HALF

The Chiefs received the ball to start the third quarter and they got to work quickly. Mahomes would use his legs and arm to move the Chiefs down the field. After finding WR Marques Valdez-Scantling for a 30 yard pass, he would run for 24 yards to get Kansas City inside the redzone. He added 14 more rushing yards before finding Kelce for his second touchdown catch of the game. This gave the Chiefs a 20-17 lead.

Buffalo’s next offensive drive gained some momentum after a penalty from Kansas City gave them good field position. RBs James Cook & Ty Johnson were utilized well on the drive. Allen threw 4 out of 5 completed passes and ended the 15 play drive with a touchdown pass to WR Khalil Shakir. This would give the Bills the lead 24-20.

The Chiefs would use their RB duo of Edwards-Helaire and Isaiah Pacheco to keep pace. Mahomes would find Valdez-Scantling again for a huge pass for 32 yards to put the Chiefs at the Buffalo 18 to end the quarter. Pacheco would then begin the fourth quarter with a 4 yard touchdown run. This gave the Chiefs the lead 27-24 and was the 7th lead change of the game!

COSTLY MISTAKES BY CHIEFS & BILLS

Down 3 early in the forth quarter, the Bills offense would stall after a incomplete pass from Allen to Diggs. They would attempt to go for it on fourth down but was unsuccessful after Damar Hamlin failed to convert on a punt fake run. This allowed the Chiefs to take possession. Pacheco would break for a big 32 yard run that got them in scoring postion.

Just when it seemed Kansas City would score again, a fumble by Hardeman would see the ball go out of bounds in the end zone. Buffalo challenged the runner was down by contact ruling, and the play was reversed. This would result in a touchback and give the Bills the ball at the 20.

After back to back punts from both teams, Buffalo would take a shot to reclaim the lead. The drive nearly came to end when Allen fumbled the ball on a run attempt. The Bills would recover and move into Chiefs territory. Allen would convert a huge 4th down attempt with a pass to Shakir. Buffalo would end up just outside the redzone as the two-minute warning stopped the game.

The Bills would try to tie the game once again with a field goal. Tyler Bass who has been perfect this playoff series, missed wide right from 44 yards out.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

The defending Super Bowl champion Chiefs move on to their sixth straight AFC Championship Game with the win. They will face off against the Baltimore Ravens and MVP candidate Lamar Jackson. For the Bills, their miraculous season comes to and end with high hopes for a repeat performance next year.
