Kendrick Lamar Releases “GNX” Album

KENDRICK LAMAR DROPS “GNX”

On Friday afternoon KENDRICK LAMAR decided to pop out and release “GNX” to the masses. His sixth studio album to date already is setting records and addressing everything that encompasses the Compton MC. It’s the unexpectant manner of this release that makes Lamar a master of the anti-rollout. Pitchfork Magazine reports that since the start of the year, he’s turned 12 words’ worth of X posts and a couple of tracks accompanied by still images to Instagram into an era-defining rap beefa number-one single, and a booking to perform at the Super Bowl LIX halftime show, in New Orleans.

The 12 track EP has turned the genre on it’s collective ear. Kendrick wasted little time nor bars speaking on everyone including Drake, Snoop Dogg and Lil’ Wayne. Lamar was given the nod to perform at this year’s Super Bowl over Wayne who is from New Orleans. Let’s tap in to this remarkable album!

Kendrick Lamar GNX

WHAT TO EXPECT

Kendrick Lamar, known for his lyrical prowess has never been one to not speak his mind. This is evident on the track “Wacced Out Murals.” One example was when he spoke on West Coast veteran Snoop Dogg. K-Dot spits “Snoop posted ‘Taylor Made,’ I prayed it was the edibles/I couldn’t believe it, it was only right for me to let it go/Won the Super Bowl and Nas the only one congratulate me.” Check out “Wacced Out Murals” down below:

“GNX” contains tracks with some of the dopest samples heard in a long time. For example, the track “Luther” is one of the smoothest grooves on the album. Kendrick pairs up with SZA once again to create sonic bliss. Check it out down below!

EDITOR’S TAKE

Kendrick Lamar continues to usher in the notion of good music that’s been evident all year. In 44 minutes, K-Dot flexed on the industry with an album that solidifies his status in the game. This is a great way for Lamar to close out the year in front of his upcoming Super Bowl performance.

After giving the album a full listen, my pick from “GNX” is “The Heart Pt. 6.” I was anticipating this track ever since Drake decided to add his version of it to the rap beef saga. The SWV sample is top tier and one of the dopest tracks on the EP. Check it out down below!

What do you think of Kendrick Lamar’s new album? Is it one of the best releases of the year? Let us know down in the comments what you think!

THE FUNK DOC IS BACK

REDMAN, the iconic New Jersey rapper, is finally gearing up to release Muddy Waters 2, the long-awaited sequel to his classic 1996 album Muddy Waters.

This upcoming album has been in development for several years. Red has been hinting at its progress as early as 2011. Fans have eagerly awaited new music since his last project (3 Joints) in 2020. Now, after years of anticipation and teasers, Muddy Waters 2 is on the horizon.

Redman
(Photo Cred: The Source Magazine)

Redman kept the excitement alive by dropping singles and music videos that give a taste of what to expect from the new album.

For instance, the track “So Cool,” which features his signature humor and raw lyricism, was released alongside a visual that showcases scenes from Atlantic City, paying homage to the gritty and nostalgic feel of Muddy Waters. His recent single “80 Barz” also delivered a freestyle filled with witty bars, further building hype for the sequel.

Redman

REDMAN- MUDDY WATERS TOO

The album is expected to balance Redman’s signature playful style and raw energy with more modern production. Longtime collaborator Eric Sermon (Def Squad) is involved in the production, ensuring that the project retains the classic vibe while bringing something fresh for all fans.

The collaboration with RIV Music, which has worked with big names like Chris Brown and DJ Khaled, marks a significant step in Redman’s career. The endgame being to deliver a high-quality project that meets the expectations set by its predecessor.

Redman’s announcement came just before his highly publicized Verzuz battle with Method Man in April 2021. This would reignite his interest in his music. As Hip-Hop continues to evolve, Muddy Waters 2 aims to bridge the gap between the ’90s and today’s scene, reminding listeners why Redman remains a respected figure in the game. The album promises to cater to those nostalgic for the golden era while reaching out to a new generation of Hip-Hop enthusiasts.

EDITOR’S TAKE

Redman finally releasing a sequel to Muddy Waters is what Hip-Hop needs. While I’m not particularly a fan of sequels in some cases, this is the exception. I was introduced to him in high school and was blown away back then as a fan. His catalog is full of gritty, raw punchlines and bars that were perfectly captured on that first project.

They’ll be no sophomore jinx around Muddy Waters Too to worry about. Redman is an established veteran in Hip-Hop that never fails to wreck shop. Even though there’s no official release date, I can wait a little bit longer for this follow up.

SOMag Presents The Fleet Files With Fleet DJs: DJ WillyBangz | @djwillybangz

For over two decades, the fleet dj’s has grown from a small crew to a proficient coalition with over 700 members and counting. since 2001, THE WORLDWIDE FLEET DJ’s has changed the lives of both its members and the entertainment industry they have thrived in.

These are the members. These are Their Stories. THESE ARE “THE FLEET FILES”

Name: DJ WillyBangz

FLeet DJ Since: 2021

Location: New York City, New York

Region: NORTHEAST REGION/CONNECTICUT Fleet DJ’s

DJ WillyBangz

WHO IS DJ WILLYBANGZ?

DJ WillyBangz is genetically linked to being a DJ. Even before joining the Worldwide Fleet DJs, he was told at a young age this was his destiny. When I asked what drove him to become a DJ he confirmed, “I decided to become a DJ when my mom told me that I had it in my blood. I asked her what makes her say that and she told me that my father was a DJ, as well as my uncle.”

William Ubiles vested time into his craft, spending 10 hours a day perfecting his style. From transitioning records, remixing songs and mastering scratches that he wanted to learn how to do. Even conquering the art of what is called beat juggling in the DJ culture, he wanted to be the total package and that he is! WillyBangz would soon become known as DJ WillyBangz The Crowd Controller.

I asked Willy about the decision to join the Fleet DJs and he spoke on the coalition’s reputation. “I decided to become a Fleet DJ after hearing a lot of great things about the coalition from a long time friend, (Blackstorm) who is heavily involved in the music industry as well. He knew the skills that I possess and recommended that I become a Fleet DJ. After I did my home work on the coalition I said to myself this is something that I should do.”

DJ WillyBangz

At 13 my mom bought me a video tape. It was a DMC DJ Battle. After seeing that and becoming fascinated with the art form, I knew this is what I wanted to do in life.

DJ Willybangz draws inspiration from witnessing legendary DJs receive acclaim and acknowledgment. From greats like Kid Capri, Red Alert & Funkmaster Flex they have given him confirmation that he belongs. “Looking at their accomplishments, rewards and achievements gives me the inspiration I need to keep going. It lets me know that theirs room for me in this business & industry cause I got a lot going on.”

I asked Willy about the ups and downs of being a DJ. He spoke highly on being the best option saying, “When I do a party my goal is to not only satisfy my crowd to full capacity, but also satisfy whoever booked me as well. If it drives them to the point where they tip for my performance on top of my regular pay, this lets me know I’ve done my job & then some.”

As a member of Fleet, Willy dons several hats. He is co-owner, Program Director, & Social Media Manager of Vibing 102.3 MMR. He is responsible for 2 radio shows. The Back To The Future Radio Show which airs Thursday nights at 7pm EST. In addition, he runs Thee Almighty Mix Show which airs Saturday nights at 8pm EST on Strongside Radio which is located on the Fleet Radio Network app.

Every DJ has significance about how they got their stage name. Willy spoke on how he came up with his moniker. “I got my name by always being good at whatever I put my mind to. When I was a kid I wanted to draw, so I drew until I became good at it. It’s like when you say that someone “rocks” but I’m using the word “bangz” instead. So when I became great at DJ’ing, that is where I came up with WillyBangz and I just put the DJ in front.”

When he’s not listening to national artists like Jay-Z and The Notorious B.I.G, Willy is listening to his own music. When I asked him what can we expect from him moving forward, he gave us plenty to look forward to. “I currently have 3 mixtapes out under my Hip-Hop Havoc Mixtape Series Volume 1 & 2. They can be found on MyMixtapes.com, MixtapeFactory.com & Hip Hop Havoc. Volume 3 can be found on LiveMixtapes.com as well as MyMixtapes.com.”

When I asked Willy about any jewels of wisdom he would give to aspiring DJs he spoke on visualization. “Look at the industry as if it were a puzzle, vision the bigger picture in your head and start to put the pieces in place. Even the ones that don’t work at the moment matter, put them on the side cause you will eventually need them to complete the goal at the end of the day.

He continued, “It will take time but keep going because before you know it your mental creative picture will come full circle and the project of your future in this industry will become a beautiful portrait / painting that you will be able to frame surrounded by your accolades, never give up.”

DJ WillyBangz

It’s like a way of saying that something or somebody “rocks” but I’m using the word “bangz” instead. DJ WillyBangz, feel me.

DJ WillyBangz

I had the pleasure of meeting DJ WillyBangz at this year’s Fleet DJs Music Conference for the first time. His passion and drive make him a valuable member of the coalition.

I gave Willy the floor for shout outs and acknowledgement. “Let me give a super big shout out to my beautiful wife Elizabeth whom with out her support non of this would be possible. To my mom Janet & my second mom / aunt Ivette for all of their support throughout the years. My brother DJ Chill who is my business partner together we run Vibing 102.3 MMR (Moore Music Radio).

“Shout out to DJ Stone who is another of my business associates who helps us to keep the station running smoothly, Shout out to all my supporters out their who help me to push my brand, and a super big shout out to all of the artist who rock with me heavy who see my vision and are eager to bring it to life. I’d like to give all praises to the most high and invite everyone who took the time to read this to tune into my radio shows.”

“Last but most definitely not least you the reader who found my story interesting enough to read this fleet file long enough to get to this point, much love & big respect. Oh and don’t forget to catch me at a club, bar, or lounge near you, I’m outside you hearrrd!!! Salute.

HIP-HOP TURNS 51: In 2024, Hip-Hop celebrates its 51st anniversary, marking over five decades of cultural and musical innovation. On August 11, 1973, when DJ Kool Herc threw a back-to-school party at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx. Here, Herc introduced his revolutionary “breakbeat” technique, laying the groundwork for what would become Hip-Hop.

Hip-Hop Turns 51

Humble Beginnings: The 70’s

As the 1970s unfolded, pioneers like Grandmaster Flash, Afrika Bambaataa, and the Furious Five began shaping the genre. Introducing the world to 4 elements (emceeing, DJing, breakdancing, and graffiti). These four pillars defined the early culture, turning Hip-Hop into a powerful form of self-expression for the youth of marginalized communities.

Breaking The Glass Ceiling: The 80’s

The 1980s marked a critical period of expansion as Hip-Hop entered the mainstream. Acts like Run-D.M.C., LL Cool J, and Public Enemy pushed the boundaries of the genre, bringing it to larger audiences and exploring themes of social justice, inequality, and empowerment. This decade also saw the advent of Hip-Hop’s commercial success, with record labels recognizing its potential and investing in its growth.

The Golden Age: The 90’s

The 1990s are often considered Hip-Hop’s golden age, with artists like Tupac Shakur, The Notorious B.I.G., Nas, and Wu-Tang Clan delivering albums that remain iconic. This era not only marked the geographic spread of Hip-Hop, but also the rise of West Coast rap and Southern Hip-Hop. This would diversify the sound and stories being told.

Hip-Hop Turns 51

The New Millennium: 2000’s

As Hip-Hop crossed into the new millennium, it continued to evolve, influencing global pop culture in ways unimaginable in its early days. Artists like Jay-Z, Eminem, and Kanye West became household names, while the genre’s influence spread to fashion, language, and lifestyle.

HIP-HOP AT 51

In its 51st year, Hip-Hop stands as the most popular and influential genre in the world. Its history is a testament to its power to adapt, evolve, and inspire. From the South Bronx to global domination, Hip-Hop’s journey is a narrative of resilience, creativity, and the relentless pursuit of expression. Is Kanye West Really Retiring from Music?

Kanye West

Photo Cred: The Sun

Rumors have been swirling about Kanye West, also known as Ye, potentially retiring from music. However, recent developments indicate that this might not be possible, at least not legally.

Contractual Obligations

Kanye West is currently embroiled in a legal battle with EMI Music Publishing, which has a clause in his contract preventing him from retiring. According to the contract, he must remain actively involved in music creation as his primary occupation and cannot take an extended hiatus or retire. This unusual stipulation has led Kanye to seek legal recourse, citing California’s seven-year limit on personal service contracts (Essence).

Artistic Evolution

Despite these legal hurdles, Kanye continues to produce music and is even planning a world tour for 2024-2025, indicating that he remains deeply involved in his musical career. His latest album, “Vultures,” released in early 2024, suggests that he’s still very much in the game, with his signature style evolving yet again (Essence).

Legal Battle

Kanye’s lawsuit against EMI is an attempt to free himself from this binding contract. He argues that he has been under EMI’s control since 2003, well beyond the seven-year limit, hoping to leverage a legal precedent set by actress Olivia de Havilland in the 1940s to gain his freedom (Essence).

Conclusion

While the idea of Kanye West retiring from music might intrigue fans and critics alike, the reality is far more complex. Legally bound by his contract, Kanye’s musical journey appears to be far from over, with new projects and performances continuing to define his prolific career.
