THE 22nd ANNUAL SEA AWARDS

A staple in Southern music and entertainment, the Southern Entertainment Awards is once again on the horizon. This celebrated institution rose from humble beginnings to spotlight the South’s most prominent artists and DJ’s. Based in Nashville, Tennessee, the annual awards show has grown substantially from its remarkable beginnings at Gibson’s Showcase in 2004.

Known as the SEA’s, the event originated in Nashville as well as Tunica and Memphis. With it’s growth in attendance numbers over time, this led to the event expanding categories and nominations. The reputation of the SEA’s is strengthened by reputable and successful professionals both independent and mainstream.

Some of the industry’s most notable artists emerged from the SEA’s including Big K.R.I.T., Yo Gotti and Nicki Minaj.

THE SEA MISSION STATEMENT

The Southern Entertainment Awards strives to be a platform that showcases independent talent. Offering industry support and bridging the many gaps between music, arts and brands. Through tailored efforts, initiatives and consistent outreach, the SEAs challenges themselves to provide a solid foundation for indie artist.

Entering its 22nd year, the SEAs strive to be a well-known and respected venue and channel. It gives independent artists worldwide a platform. Far evolved from its desire to be an outlet used to acknowledge southern DJs, the SEAs were once viewed as a ‘regional event’. Now they are an esteemed as a recognizable brand throughout the world.

FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION

On Sunday May 22nd the city of Atlanta will host the SEA awards. Details for this event are coming soon. For the third year in a row, Straight Official Magazine is nominated for an award at the event! The publication is up for Author/Publication of the Year.

In celebrating Hip-Hop, lifestyle and culture, we have been diligent in our quest to break the next new artist. Backed by The Worldwide Fleet DJs we are the home publication for the DJ coalition. We are both honored and counting down the days to be apart of this spectacular event!

“Ready, Set, Soar” – A Day of Empowerment and Community

Waldorf, MD – On Saturday, August 10th, the “Ready, Set, Soar” event, hosted by the inspiring Tiea Whitaker, transformed Waldorf into a hub of empowerment, collaboration, and community spirit. The Women’s Empowerment event was not just a gathering, but a celebration of strength, ambition, and the shared journey towards success.

Ready Set Soar Into Empowerment

The event was packed with activities that engaged and energized the diverse crowd. From the moment attendees arrived, the lively atmosphere was evident with the Worldwide Fleet DJs in attendance. DjPynkDyamond (VA), DjHoney (MD), Dr.Marsha McLean (VA), Pam Berkley (VA) and music by DJ Mel (MD) setting the tone for the day with uplifting music that kept spirits high.

The presence of vendors added to the event’s vibrancy. It offered a wide array of products and services that reflected the entrepreneurial spirit of the community. Providing everything from unique handcrafted items to wellness products, it created a diverse and dynamic marketplace.

A highlight of the event was the influx of attendees from out of town, showcasing the broad appeal and impact of “Ready, Set, Soar.” Their participation underscored the event’s significance, as people traveled to Waldorf, Md to be part of this empowering experience. The mix of local and visiting participants added to the richness of the day.

Tiea Whitaker, the driving force behind the event, set the stage with her opening remarks. She encouraged everyone to embrace their potential and to support one another in their respective journeys. Her message of resilience and empowerment resonated deeply, serving as the foundation for the day’s activities.

In an interview with Miss Unique, owner Ahmed Moggali shared the challenges in bringing his vision of The Castle to life. “It was hard for me to get this Castle done because everybody let me down” explained Ahmed. “I felt that because I was young, nobody believed in my vision. But I worked hard and even sacrificed, selling my home overseas to bring enough money to make this dream a reality.”

Ahmed’s dedication and perseverance is truly inspiring. Despite obstacles, he remains committed to finishing the project. “All I need right now to finish this project… is for customers to keep coming and shopping with us,” he said. The Castle will also feature a meat market, fresh vegetables, and groceries, providing another shopping option besides Walmart.

Kendrick Lamar Pops Out With Friends LIVE In Concert

KENDRICK LAMAR was outside last night, and it was one for the ages!

The Compton MC and Drake destroyer performed a one-off concert that took place in Inglewood, CA at the Kia Forum. In celebration of Juneteenth, as well as his first performance post the highly publicized beef between him and the 69 God, he would double down live with a collection of hits stemmed from the feud.

The Pop Out: Ken & Friends show was also streamed live on Amazon Music as well as Twitch. Kendrick didn’t skimp out on the friends part as a plethora of artists joined him on stage. The performance was the greatest show in Hip-Hop this year and had several memorable moments.

THE POP OUT: KEN & FRIENDS

Lamar was donned in apparel similar to what 2 Pac wore for a concert in 1994. He would channel his inner Pac to performs songs like “Euphoria” and “6:16 in LA” for the first time live. The energy was high as Kendrick would reunite with TDE mates Jay Rock & ScHoolboy Q to perform hits like “Money Trees” & “That Part.”

Then Kendrick would stop being humble. After that he would go right back on business! He then performed ” Like That” which was the track that began the best week in Hip-Hop musically. Once the buzz fell a bit, Kenny surprised everyone by bringing out Dr. Dre to perform his classics. He would then whisper something in Kendrick’s ear that everyone in attendance could hear… “Psst, I See Dead People”

Saving the best for last, Kendrick performed “Not Like Us” which is the final installment of the series of disses between him and Drake. He would then go on to perform the song again, and again and again! The crowd came alive as Kenny performed the song six times total!

Here is a scorecard for those who didn’t get to see it live. Kendrick performed the song once with Dr. Dre, twice by himself, once with the cultivator of the track (DJ Mustard) and two more times with everyone from Big Boi, Black Hippy and many more!!

Journalist Bae | See Black Girls Rock!

Happy Juneteenth! Can I say that yet? It’s about that time for the Annual Black Girls Rock celebration! You may have forgotten because this is the first one after a 5-year hiatus. It will tape May 27th, 2024 at 6pm EST from the Fox Theatre in Atlanta. You can buy tickets HERE. Will I see you there? Doors open at 5pm. Don’t meet me there, beat me there!

Danielle Brooks via People (Host of Black Girls Rock)

As I said before, we haven’t seen this celebration since 2019. This year it will be hosted by Danielle Brooks (Orange is the New Black, The Color Purple). According to the event’s twitter page, they will be honoring black girls such as Fantasia, Stephanie Mills, Tracee Ellis Ross, and more. If you aren’t in attendance, then you can experience the award show August 1st on Lifetime.

If you happen to be unfamiliar with the show. Here’s a clip from previous year 2013 hosted by Black-ish star, Tracee Ellis Ross and Regina King. It features a fantastic performance from Kelly Rowland, EVE, and Sevyn Streeter. You never know who will pop out for the culture.

The Southern Entertainment Awards has, is and will always be a staple in Southern culture, music and entertainment. From it’s humble beginnings the conference has grown into an annual celebration of Southern artists and DJs. Based in Nashville, Tennessee, the annual awards show has grown substantially from its remarkable beginnings at Gibson’s Showcase in 2004.

Since its conception, the event was held Nashville, Tunica and Memphis. Over the years, there’s a consistent increase in attendance numbers, expansions of categories and nominations and media coverage. The SEA’s built a strong recognition of reputable and successful independent and mainstream professionals.

With names like Yo Gotti, Nicki Minaj, B.o.B., Conya Doss, Algebra Blessett, Rudy Currence and Big K.R.I.T. to emerge from the SEA’s, it’s clear their impact is something to behold.

Legendary Midwest recording artist, Zeus Rebel Waters is in the midst of his Summer Detention Tour. The St. Louis native has hit the road with Yerrty G and his Weirdo Gang affiliates. With stops across the nation Zeus plans to use this summer to bring his brand Rock-Hop to the fans. With influences that range from the early days of Rock and Roll to hardcore Rap Zeus has found a land and made it completely his own.

From Rukapuff to Zeus

Having one successful career in the music industry is hard enough, but having two is almost unheard of. The artist formerly known as Rukka Puff has parlayed his notoriety as a fun-loving, high-energy performer into an artist rebrand that has allowed him to grow into one of St. Louis’ most recognizable faces. Having been invited to throw the opening pitch and perform at Busch Stadium, home of the St. Louis Cardinals, Zeus has even been recognized by the mayor of his home city being awarded his own day (June 1st) for his continued contributions both musically and through his charitable work with the youth in the city.

Partnering with local Wendy’s restaurants for his youth reading initiative has allowed his platform to grow exponentially While still maintaining his creative and artistic integrity. These accomplishments are great, but none of them would be available if his music wasn’t also equally impressive. With multiple songs being played across various Midwest radio stations, both terrestrial and online, being placed in movies and television shows, and burning up clubs across the country Zeus is in prime position to reach national stardom.

The Fleet DJs Music Conference is an event that for over a decade has been the official open invite from the entertainment industry. Hosted by The Worldwide Fleet DJs, it is one of the major events that kicks off the start of the summer. This year the party takes place in Raleigh, North Carolina. As the chief editor of Straight Official Magazine, I attended last year’s conference and made it a point not to miss another one!

WHO ARE THE FLEET DJs?

A coalition of over 600 and counting, Fleet is a makeup of DJs, industry tastemakers, producers, models, bloggers and artists. This dynamic group is the top DJ coalition in the world, producing mixtapes that feature both major and independent artists. Fleet is well documented for for not only changing the industry, but the members that make up their amazing team.

The Fleet DJs Music Conference provides opportunities to artists and business owners through networking experiences unlike any other. Some events include a celebrity basketball game, a Sneaker Ball and a Panel Day. All attendees can also meet members of Fleet DJ’s as well. They can also gain knowledge from radio program directors and record label executives who will be in the building to assist artists in getting both seen and heard.

THIS YEAR’S ITINERARY

The itinerary for this year’s conference released this week and it will be UP! The event will last 4 days from July 20th to July 24th. Along with the DJ battles, private listening parties and music networking panels Fleet will be teaming with Hot 97.9 FM to provide both a festival & concert. This will allow the Fleet Artist Soundstage to be broadcast live in front of the city and the industry.
